This thing is easy! The patches are great out of the box, and it is
easy to edit patches. It has a good thorough manual, that can get a
bit technical in spots, but you don't need it to use the board.
I bought this new in 1984 and haven't needed the manual but two or
three times since I first bought it.

Features : 7
The keyboard action is typical for keyboards of that era, no
pressure sensitivity, the MIDI is fine.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 9
The instruments are not that realistic, but I have been able to get
some PHAT bass, some low drum-like sounds, great strings and simulated
woodwind sounds. This is great for rock, rap and dance.

Reliability : 6
It's been about ten years since I've gigged with it, I do use it in
the studio though. I have had it since 1984 -- it does skip notes
in polyphonic mode now and the pitch bend/modulation wheel does need
some repair.

Customer Support : 7
Very friendly when I've ordered replacement cables and various items.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing music for almost 30 years now, and keyboards for
about 20. I compared this to its contemporaries at the time and
found this to be the best. I wish it had appregio and
touch-sensitivity, but you can't have it all! I would buy again
because it is has been a good keyboard for so long.

Why doesn't some one re-issue this awesome sounding warm synth??!!? No need for a manual as editing sounds is effortlessly easy to use because of it's front pannel sliders and simple controls. Having a patch editor would be necessary only if program sliders are no longer working. Take for example my JUNO-106: The frequency 4-position slider under HPF has pysically broken and is not available through Roland any longer(all other sliders are available). The only way to edit this now is through a patch editor. Even though this function is not working on my Juno, that does not stop me from using this synth EVERYDAY for my music productions and I don't use a patch editor. Yes, I like it that much!

Features : 8
Polyphony at six notes is adequate. Keyboard action is so good I would like to use it as my controller, but I don't want to accidentally damage it, plus it has no velocity. Chorus effect is a bit noizy, but for the great sound this synth puts out- who cares! It adds a certain character to the sound and is available in two settings plus the ability to disable it. The MIDI spec is okay, you have the ability to save patches through sysex one at a time, which can actually take a long time. I've read other ways to save patches - too complicated for me. I just plug in a good old fasion tape deck and back-up my patches that way through the tape save function. It's simple, easy and quick.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 10
No real instruments here folks. This synth would work nicely in a church for playing soft warm organ tones. BUT..hidden beneath it's pannel and generic colored push buttons this synth reaks of techno, ambient and alternative dance music. Anyone who has a JUNO knows. In a way, it reacts very cold as velocity and aftertouch are not present. It's warm tone and friendly sound make up for this loss even without different on board effects besides Chorus.

Reliability : 9
Very dependable instument, I have powered mine on almost everyday for about eight years and have had no problems. I believe one of my voices is going out, but I have found information on the web to isolate the problem and repair it. I would not dare gig with this syth as I would be too afraid to damage it. If I had to though, I would use it on stage without a backup. I belive in Roland reliability.

Customer Support : 10
Just recently (Aug. 2000), Roland Corp was able to provide me with JUNO-106 potentiometer replacement sliders and some other rare parts I needed for my JX-3P. I would say, for having these parts available for keyboards that came out in 1983-4, it's a miracle. That phone call made me a Roland believer. Very friendly and informed customer service rep, for a telemarketer looking up parts in front of a computer. Any authorized Roland reapir site can repair your unit as long as the parts are available.

Overall Rating : 10
I would buy this synth over and over again, worth every penny. I am even considering getting another one to sleep in my bed next to me. I have been playing syths for about 10 years now and this is my favorite. I have many other syths to compare to the 106 like the Sequential Prophet 600, Akai AX-60, Clavia Nordlead2, Oberheim Matirx 1000, Roland Alpha JUNO 1, JX-8P, and JX-3P to name a few. None of these have the warm tone of a 106, the JX-3P comes close though (same time erra). I wish it had a keyboard split so I could get two sounds out of it at once, but program changes will have to do. It has grown with me for eight years and I still use it almost everyday. When I first got this synth, I considered it a "It'll get me by for now syth". Now I can't imagine myself without it! It's a sound that grows on you and keeps surprising me as my musical depth continues, my JUNO still keeps up nicely.

This thing is so easy to use. It came with a nice manual but who needs it? You can make up good sounds very quickly, or you can sit for hours and get some really awesome sounds with creative use of the LFO and pedals. You do not need a patch editor. You can download patches, which is fun.

Features : 10
Polyphony is six notes, which is fine. Keyboard action is to my liking. The built in chorus is rich but noisy. I use it ometimes and sometimes I use my DOD Stereo Chorus pedal, which is more flexible. MIDI implementation is good.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 10
THIS THING IS NOT FOR CREATING "REAL" INSTRUMENTS! It's an analog, and a really good one. You can create organ, piano, drums, brass, strings, tubular bells with some work. This thing is PHAT! Don't listen to the people that say it sounds light, airy or weak. There is so much stuff you can do with it if you use it enough. You will not be disappointed in this board. It will make dance floors THROB if you let it. I use it in most every song I write.

Reliability : 10
I turn it on every day and it turns on and works. I would gig without backup. It's built better than the Yamaha and Casio crap keyboards that they build today. In its day it was a "amateur" board, the Jupiter being a pro board. But today, this completely whoops the crap out of anything.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Heard that Roland is good, no experience. Haven't needed it.

Overall Rating : 10
If someone stole it, they would get hurt very badly. I have a lot of time into programing it, and the thing is just awesome. One of my friends has a Juno 60, and I know they sound different, but the 106 sounds clearer and bolder, the 60 is more muddled, and the 60 has no MIDI. I've had it for four months now, and I use it via MIDI with a computer. It inspires me to make music.

No soft. I don't know he preset sound since I modified all and it was sold used. I don't have a manual either (you don't need.) Too easy to use.

Features : 10
Key action is great, though it doesn't have after touch or velocity touch. It has two different chorus, they both sounds good though little noisy. In many cases, this effect is big part of the sound itself. It has sliders just about anything you need to edit your sound. Ask anybody who has it. They don't want to give this synth away.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 10
Don't use it naturalist. this machine is made to kick. It can not create peaky sounds like nord or virus, but warm punchy sounds is what it is for.Combine with some attack with other synth, this is one of a kind bass sound maker too. The bass can shake the dance floor pretty much.

Reliability : 10
Very reliable. No problem since I bought it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I never had to. So I don't know.

Overall Rating : 10
If I had to choose one analog synth. This is the one, because it has many sliders and easy to use. You don't have to open windows or type in nombers. You are feeling it as you moving these faders. Multi-purpose synth for different kinds of music. I like how it looks too. Oh before I forget, try to press Bank no"A", and no"B" buttons at a same time. Something will happen on your sound,,,(it's not even in manual.)

Takes a while to figure out. Great if you like to morph to a different sound while you continue to play with the other hand. This is very analog, in terms of being able to change the sound using sliders etc. This synth is very unlike what is sold nowadays.

Features : 3
Not touch sensitive. Good for organ-type sound.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 7
A Juno-106 is very expressive in terms of being able to make your own sounds. This is the synth sound of the 70's and early 80's (which was better than the sound of the late 80's and 90's in my opinion.)

Reliability : 6
Only have had one problem with it in the last 11 years, the sub-octave slider doesn't work right, so I just don't use it.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 6
I doubt if I would replace it if lost or stolen, but I am keeping it for when I want a 70's synth sound or an organ feel.

It's WONDERFULLY easy to use. If you can't use this then you don't need to be composing techno =). I never used the presets, but patch editting is very easy, and you get 128 slots. The manual is straightforward (I have an original).

Features : 7
Its a 6 voice polyphony, could be a few more for those people like me who can use 8-9 keys between two hands. No onboard sequencer, soft sequencers are better anyway. Chorus is the main effect, and its quite nice. Best MIDI implementation of its time, with IN, OUT, and THRU, with sysex control. No expansion. Main drawback is it isn't velocity sensitive.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 8
If you're looking for accoustic or realistic sounds, look away. Else if you're looking for deep ass basses, mad filter sweeps, and other sweetness, go for the Juno.
The Juno can be used for bass accompanyment in bands, but mainly its for Electronica and composition of techno.

Reliability : 10
100% reliable. I've never had it fail for any reason whatsoever, and don't worry about bringing a backup for the Juno. Make sure the battery is fresh if you play live.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
If it were lost or stolen, I'd be f***ing pissed. I'm a bit more of a digital person, I love programmability and EFX. Thats what I'd like to see more of, more programmability, and midi velocity sensitivity =). The analogueness is fat, not supposedly as phat as the 60, but we have MIDI, and sysex, so deal with it. If you don't think its useful because you aren't a techno fiend, reference Madonna's Ray of Light CD. This is a keeper.

EASY!!!! Knobs and sliders make this simple to use. Saving patches really isn't that inuitive, but the manuals are available online so go check them out. I'm not sure about the presets, I think by the time I got it all the presets had been overwritten.

Features : 10
6 Voice polyphony... keyboard action isn't piano like, but it's ok because I wouldn't play this like a piano. No built in effects, no expansion, midi i/o/t, no onboard sequencer. But it's got sliders sliders sliders!!!

Expressiveness/Sounds : 10
Not realistic... it's a synth! Nobody really wants realistic sounds now. Works well for just about any kind of music, I use it for noise and electronic hardcore, but it's range is much bigger than that. Every big electronic artist has one of these, check out this partial list: William Orbit, Uberzone, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Autechre, Vince Clarke, Moby, 808 State, Underworld, Leftfield, Fluke, Josh Wink, Todd Terry, Depeche Mode, Eat Static, Biosphere, The Prodigy, The Shamen, Bushflange, Cirrus, Apollo 440, Babyland, Faithless, Union Jack and the Chemical Brothers. Apparently the newest Madonna CD used this extensively. It sounds so good I've let crowd members come up and mess with the sliders during a set.

Reliability : 10
It's dependable. It's old so I'd treat it with care, but I haven't hate any problems with it. This is a CRUCIAL part of my sound... good for everything.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 10
It's AWESOME. You can do anything with this synth. I use some pretty heavy filtering on it when I play noise and keep it clean when I play eCore. Nothing else really compares to it (except for it's Juno predecessors and the Roland HS-60 [an uglier version with built-in speakers]). I love everything about it. I use it on every single track I make... this is a staple on the gear list of everyone and with good reason.

It was my first polyfonic synth, but still in use (after 16 years). Its a easy setup when you are used to work with basic analog synths. The chorus section is a must but a lot of sounds are better in solo without it. After 16 years I still found the "green 81" sound a typical useful Roland sound (For giving depth in combination with a string machine for example). The keyboard is excellent for this kind of synth. at does not have key velocity and afthethouch

Features : 7
Six voice polyfony is not much (8 ore more are better). The chorus is simple but effective. Its one of the earlier MIDI machines but it works with all other machines (Yamaha TX7, Emu, Akai900 and Kurzweil micro piano. Not a seq. on-board

Expressiveness/Sounds : 8
If your seeking a real instrument imitator, not this one, but do you like analog sounds and synthesizers and gif sounds a extra tune ore depth this is the machine. In Holland the machine is very much in use private studios and a lot of people do use it for dance.

For me its an absolute reliable machine, i have never had problems with it.

it wil be a very bad day for me after it is stolen. I would direct try to replace it. I use it 2-3 times weekly for 16 years. I am playing for 21 years and don't hate the machine at all, I love it !! Of course there are better machines but theres allways better.
For example ; I had a Seq.Circuits Pro-one, fantastic sound but always problems with tuning, very unexcepteble keyboard, same price, I sold it. Its just like a Japanese car its not top model but it works for many years without problems, you can relay on it. I use it in combination with a Yamaha TX7/MSX computer, a Kurzweil midiboard with micropiano, and a Korg Lamda.

With an effect generator, the juno-106 may work very well in many different kind of music. ambient (with deep reverb), dub (good bass), try distortion and delay with the juno's filter --> TB-303 for Trance-Goa type.

Simple. Easier to synthesize sounds than a Casio SK-1. Single function sliders, buttons and switches, all labelled.

Features : 5
Polyphonic. The built-in Chorus adds way to much noise to use. It does not respond to keyboard velocity which is the second biggest drawback in the design (the Juno 2 does, though). All sliders send & receive MIDI, which is nice.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 3
It is the type of synthesizer you can play with for 30 minutes and honestly feel you've heard about every sound it can create. The synth sound is very recognizable. The single oscillator, single envelope, single one-shape LFO design is way too limiting. I don't even think the cheapest Moogs are this basic. High points are that it recreates some excellent 80s sounds.

Reliability : 9
It has locked up on me once before, but this was fixed by simply turning it off and on. Very road worthy & ideal for live techno performance.

Overall Rating : 4
The Juno-106 would be an excellent first synthesizer for someone interested in techno. However, I would not recommend it since you can get small true analog (linear circuit) synths and excellent second generation digital synths for the same price. With all that said, I have used mine a couple times for recording, but usually just use it in the studio while writing & sequencing. Like any synthesizer, its fun (yes, the DX7 can be fun too!), and if you have one and like synthesizers, you'll love it all the same. If you must have one, don't pay more than $350 US.

Here is where this instrument excells, The presets on mine (factory + orig owner) I would NEVER use. Create the patches that excite and enhance your song and then find that G-Spot on the patch that send it off and work it - interacting with the song as it progresses. The preset you create is the starting place for sound manipulation. The 106 is extremely expressive used in this way. Check out the way William Orbit used the Juno 106 on every song of Madonna's Ray of Light CD. Most of the synth work was the Juno 106. (see www.williamorbit.com - under Studio - Madonna CD). Even if you don't like Madonna you can appreciate Orbit's work.

I just got this unit - the HS-60 - (which is exactly the Juno 106 with built in speakers) because I wanted the creative control. If you're looking for a balls to the wall freight train analog synth for your setup, you should probably get another synth. If you're needing a creative analog synth addition to your setup, then the 106 is worth a look. Realize, however, that the creativity comes from you - if you're looking for a synth that you just press a key and say "Oh boy that's creative" - you won't like the 106. However, the 106 is so easy to manipulate that expressing yourself is not complicated.

Okay, here is the real lowdown. Ignore the other comments about this synth sounding cheesy! I have worked with a range of synths including the roland sh series and Korg MS-20, MS-10. Such instruments will only as good as the person using it. True it is nowhere near as bass heavy as a synth with VCO's, but it provides some very ethereal spacy drones that I love. Just listen to Autechre for a resource.

I won't bore everyone with yet another review of its use and sounds; I want to pass on some other important info I've learned to help new potential buyers of these boards (but in a nutshell I love the 106). Please skip down to the important stuff in "Reliability", "Support", and "Overall"...

Features : 9

Expressiveness/Sounds : 9

Reliability : 9
Please note these are 10 to 15 years old now, plus they were built to be the "economy" synth in their day and the Jups were intended at the Professional (touring) market. The 106 still though is way better built than most boards of today, which is a d--- shame. (XP10 chassis is a piece of crap). Common problems are: voice chips that die, pitch stick broke off, patch buttons that don't work, sliders that don't move nicely, missing slider caps, power-cord jack replacements done poorly, missing pieces internally and externally from sloppy repairmen.

Customer Support : 8
Roland has been good to me, but charge high for old photocopied manuals ($15) and have sent me the wrong stuff a few times. PLEASE KNOW BEFORE BUYING ONE: pitch-bend joystick is NOT available anymore, slider caps Roland sends you are for Juno-60 and DO NOT fit, but from looking at pics I swear the JP-8000 uses same caps as 106... I know that caps for Jup-6 are same as 106. Keys ARE available and cheap at $5 ea. Hosa sells 2-prong power cord cheap at $10. What's really cool is many nice people share their 106 patches on the web.

Overall Rating : 9
PLEASE BE WARNED! there are many shysters right now selling really dorked up 106's for high money ($450-$600) and they all say theirs is mint or works great. This is a 10-15yr old economy-level board, many of these have been mistreated and neglected, stored improperly, etc. Internals are sensitive electronics unlike a 15yr old guitar. Use online-escrow or some method to protect yourself! I bought a very good one for $400 and then bought a 2nd for $450 that turned out to be a complete piece of crap! Yes I have filed fraud charges but do you really think I'll get my money back? The bad 106 has output sounding like it's run through a very poor quality distortion box, and its internals have so many problems and actual pieces missing it was shocking. On the bad 106 2 patch buttons do not work at all, and the other 6 have to be tapped several times to take. This kind of fraud happens when an item gets really hot for sale so be careful.

Forget presets, this machine is about making your own sounds. This machine is knob stylin, so just grab a knob and intuitively change settings. Easy, easy, no manual needed.

Features : 8
6 Voice polyphony, LFO, an interesting (not as acidic, but with a delay unit you can make it that way) resonant filter, and it's MIDI. Not velocity sensative but its unique character demands it so. The real deal here is -- KNOBS -- sequenceable control w/ sysex; or just grab the damn thing and move it live!!

Expressiveness/Sounds : 9
For those people who complain about the "thin" or "cheesy" of this machine are obviously not listening the right way. First of all, get rid of your cheapo computer monitor type speakers and get some that can handle some ridiculously MEAN bottom end cos for bass this machine can create some serious serious damage. I WANT TO HEAR ONE OF THESE IN A LIVE SETUP W/ _REAL_ SPEAKERS!!! I'm telling you, this thing will rock and move the entire place. Cheese? I assume--if you have patch editing deficiancy or want every synth to have a 303 like filter sound--no fun in that! The sounds can range from floaty, dreamy pads to aggressive, abusive bass!

Reliability : 7
Haven't gigged with it, but I plan to -- I gotta hear this thing @ a party!!

I found this one in mint condition and am VERY pleased-- if you want techno / industrial, hard bass or good floaty pads, this is where to go. Junglists, heads up, cos the bass factor here is incredible-- listen to it and play with it for a while (on GOOD speakers) to see if you can find "it" inside-- if you see it, go for it.

The presets sound ok (actually kinda cheesy). Editing the patches is very simple, a breeze. A patch editor isn't needed, this thing is that easy to edit, unless your a mongoloid. didn't even really need the manual (although I have the original).

Features : 8
6 voice polyphony (not multitimberal). I don't even use it in polyphonic mode, I use it in mono phonic mode anyways for thicker sounds. It has built in chorus which does make it sound phatter (I don't know what the other guys where talking about "it doesnt make any difference"). The only expansion capability it has is an external tape deck hook up wich to store patches, you don't even need it cause you can store your patches through sysex. Every slider on the board sends sysex messages. So your sequencer will record your slider movements for you, a great thing. no onboard sequencer.

the sounds that you can make on this synth are great PHAT sounds awsome for techno, Goa, Trance and industrial not "cheesy" at all. Its is not velocity sensitive, and does not have aftertouch.

Reliability : 7
I think this is a vey dependable synth. Yha I would take it to a gig.

I think its great!!! It sounds nice and Phat, the sliders send sysex info, you can do patch changes through sysex, its just plain great if your doing electronic music. If you have one and can't find any use for it,or think its sounds "cheesy", then you don't know how to use it. I think it was worth what I paid especially since it came with a hard case. I could find a use for this in almost every song. I also have a Nord Lead 2. So I would say if you want this kind of sound and many other sounds and can afford it get a Nord Lead 2 instead. After you've bought your Nord Lead 2 then get a Juno 106 cause its worth it. I wouldn't pay anymore then $400 max. though if somebody wants more then $400 for a juno 106 tell them to stick it where the sun dont shine, cause although it does sound great it is old, and its not multitimberal.

An analogue synth anyone can create a sound with. Many sliders, but laid out in the usual logical fashion, so figuring out what each does becomes clear after some time. Saving presets....super simple. You probably don't even need the manual.

Features : 5
6 voice polyphony...but no multitimbrality. Can save patches, has MIDI, chorus (doesn't do all that much), portamento, filter/pitchbend/LFO control with the joystick. MIDI will record slider movements! Yay! Too bad no arpeggiator....plus, I really don't get why they have stereo outs....but I'm not complaining, it could be useful.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 7
Depends on what you're after. True, not the most analogue sounding, but after comparing it to a friend's Alesis QS6, it started to sound very analogue! No velocity or aftertouch, the chorus, like I said, changes the sound a bit, but not really much of an effect otherwise. Has portamento and the filter/pitchbend/LFO can be control with the joystick.

Reliability : 8
Bought it used and everything works perfect. I'm not too concerned that it will break down. So far mine's only seen studio use, but I'd lug it to a gig.

No idea...but at least Roland's still around.

Overall Rating : 8
For what a lot of people are asking for this here, I got a deal, but if I had the option of buying it again,hmmm...I don't know. I might spend more for something new just for multitimbrality. Personally, I like the sounds for what I use it for, and can see a use for it in every track I'd do. Besides, the Chemical Bros, Leftfield, Crystal Method, Prodigy, Depeche Mode, Faithless, 4-Hero, BT, Todd Terry, Masters at Work (basically everybody) has one of these...so it must be alright!

bass has great range but nothing else worth mentioning very easy to use.........but never the same sound twice....maybe a plus for you trip-hop muscians no manual...but can order from roland for $10

Features : 5
midi ......yes..... ........effects easy to use........but nothing unique so far.......

Expressiveness/Sounds : 4
no.....nothing of real quality to mention.....have to agree....pretty cheezy machine and thin sounds....probably a basement techno artist or your local high school drama club for some special effects noises

Reliability : 5
so far No.........what kind of gig? do you play with heavy bass and guitars? then this might be a great instrument live.......if in the right muscians hands my prediction? Groups like Garbage, Depeche Mode and U2 will continue to influence using synth tech in creating solid basslines for modern rock music.......The kids will follow!

Customer Support : 5
Yeah...very good....I called roland and their tech support was great...and knowledgable....but parts are diff story...

Overall Rating : 5
yeah its worth 250......but only time will tell if serves my purpose......... I really need to get a new korg...so ill never be completely satisfied until then.......... Its great for old new order...........if your just starting out and you want learn your basics..........

I have no idea if my presets were the actual factory ones but they were ok Editing patches is beyong simple , every function has a knob/slider and the synth isnt that complex anyway .

Features : 6
6 voice polyphony , mono-timbral . No sequencer or arpegiator but MIDI that even transmits slider moves via sysex . No aftertouch or velocity . Slightly basic as far as analog synths go , 1 osc , 1 filter , 1 env , 1 lfo

Expressiveness/Sounds : 8
The 106 is the bass machine ! It shines on mega fat basses and soft pads . Not quite as good at leads but buy it for the bass alone ! A great resonant filter also

Reliability : 9
Mine is pretty reliable for a 14 year old machine . Sometimes complex midi information will freak it out a bit . I have giged with it midi'd and so far all has gone well .

Customer Support : 7
Well it is pretty old so I dont think roland will be jumping up and down to help me out but there are quite a bit of net resources .

Overall Rating : 8
I would definetly buy one again , maybe an alpha juno 2 if I found one or maybe a juno 60 . Its not quite a Jp-8 but its a pretty good entry analog machine and best of all its midi!

A breeze to use. Basic setup any novice (like me) can work.

Features : 5
Its got a lot of good stuff (I won't bore you w/ the details, you can find that elsewhere). Its polyphonic and has portamento (glide). The keyboard is real nice for what it is. It doesn't feel like a piano or anything but the keys at least feel sturdy. Like you're playing something when you press down. MIDI, but no sequencer or arpeggiator on-board.

Expressiveness/Sounds : 1
This thing sounds like crap. Nothing like a Juno-60. The sounds are complete cheese. I hate to dis this thing so hard but the sounds is CRAP! THin and cheesy. Maybe its good for Spacey sounds but for thick weirdness and everything that you associate with analog synths, this is NOT it! This is somehting a piano player should get when He's feeling a little "weird" and "crazy". I gave it to my girlfriend 2 days after I got it. (I only bought it cause I got a great deal on it)

Reliability : 7
Mine works fine so far. But it hardly gets used.

A nice piece. Sounds like crap for what I use it for. Would recommend Korg PolySix if you want something that sounds a little better with similar setup (no MIDI though).
