It's very easy to use, and I simply love it, you can get some insane sounds out of this one with just some simple modulation.

It's a mono synth, so theres not much polyphony in it. but who needs polyphony anyway.
this synthesizer has Control Volt wich means that you will need a converter to drive this through midi.

It has two banks of presets, which I guess you could think of as oscillator 1 (filter and envelopes don't work on this section) and then there is an adjustable oscillator which has a variable control between sawtooth and pulse waves. There's another control for pulse width. A very noisy noise generator (which is a good thing!) and switchable between five octaves (footings). It's also detunable. You can mix between the presets and the variable oscillator.
Fairly simple 12db filter with cutoff, resonance and envelope amount controls plus dedicated envelope controls (ADSR).
Amplifier envelope (ADSR).
Good LFO particularly the speed range. Wave shapes are sine, square and sample and hold (random). This can affect either the amplifier, filter or oscillator(s), although it seems that you can't turn it off completely, which is a tad irritating. Just keep it on the VCA setting when you don't want to use it and you won't really notice it. A cool feature the LFO has is a repeat function. You hold down a note and it keeps repeating at the set speed. I love this because I can trigger the arpeggiator on my old Juno 6 with the 'trigger out' port to the Juno's 'arpeggio clock in' port. It makes the Juno's arpeggiator either a lot faster or a lot slower than the range the Juno can accomplish on it's own. There's also the obvious benefit of synchronisation.
The performance panel has a potamento control, pitch and mod wheels plus a control called 'brilliance' which acts sort of like a second filter cutoff.

Very nice warm 1970s analogue synth sound. Surprisingly good bass depth. High end can be slightly grating. There are some very strange sounds to be heard from this machine but you can also do nice and sometimes rather funky sounds too. I think it's particularly good for synth bass lines.

Well I've only had it for a few weeks. It looks like it's fallen down some stairs ....several times! Despite it's beaten up appearance, all the controls still work fine and from all other accounts, it's rock solid. Yamaha apparently are well known for the high quality of their old analogue synths.

I paid too much given the condition that it's in (cosmetically) but I don't regret it because it works fine and sounds really good. It was still cheap compared to other similar analogue synths, which in Australia, you can expect to pay up to $1000 for (yes I think that's outrageous too!).
I bought it because I wanted something that sounded different to the Juno and I was not dissapointed in the slightest! It's VERY different. I think they complement each other very well. The Juno sounds cold and the Yamaha sounds warm. Use the Yamaha for bass and the Juno for its high end.

You can find your way round it in minutes. Well laid out simple monosynth with a few quirks (mod options are interesting). Really fun to use and it is still surprising me.

Keyboard action nice, features basic but has everything you need. Channel one is presets with only a little editability, channel 2 can be other presets or manual. Both channels can be mixed together and detuned to each other etc. I ignore the presets on both channels (maybe mix channel one in every now and then) and go straight to manual use on channel 2. Presets are pants. Manual is wicked. Dont expect it to do everything - use it for its strenghts.

This is where the synth rocks big time - fat bass, wet filter squelches, insane modulation noises, drones, swells, tremelo effects. Take some time to play around and you can come up with some of the most bizarre noises imaginable. I own a minimoog and a jupiter 6 and this is still played with a lot. It is one of my favorite synths cos it looks so cool and feels so retro. 10 for what it does.

Brilliantly built, totally solid, totally reliable. Knobs and sliders satisfying and look wicked, wooden casing beautiful, a real beauty and built to last.

This is limited compared to a lot of synths - but it has a real character and will provide unique sounds different to anything else. Not a melody playing synth - more of an effects machine. Enigmatic beauty and I love it - and so does everyone else that come sin to my studio!

A breeze to use! Very easy to understand, even for the absolute beginner. Could compete with the Juno's in "user friendlyness".

Its monofonic, 37 keys and a superb 12db LP-filter. U kan control it via CV/Gate on two channels. Two ADSR and a nice asignable LFO makes the sound alive.

Absolutely no support. I'ts been more than 20 years. But I've read that you can have the manual for free from Yamaha, if you ask them.

I bought it in 1999, and I don't want to depart from it for anything. I bought it for only 150$ CAN. Very cheap.
It's and underrated synth, like his brothers, the CS20M, CS40M and CS70M.
This family can compete easily the moog brothers ! Sorry for the Minimoog "fanatic" fanclub.

Even if you know nothing about analog synthesis, the unit is very simple to understand, much simpler than traditional machines.

This is a monophonic unit, very warm filters. It has some presets and a manual control part. There are many strange presets, only a few are useable, but this is enough for everything you need. Some people don't like the springless pitch wheel, but i find it better than springed ones.

This is analog stuff... the only not analog sound that you can afford with exceptional results is the bass sound. Very deep and warm, it has also a very cool noise generator. I give it an 8 because of the non-usable sounds and the portamento feature, a bit slow for what i usually hear.

Bought mine in perfect condition, almost new. Very stong metal-wood case, like every synthy stuff. Sometimes the keyboard doesn't respond and i have to push a note on the highest octave to get them back, i don't know what happens... everything else is OK.

We're talking about 1978 gear... does anybody give a 24 year warranty?

It would be difficult to buy it again if it were lost or stolen. Maybe i would try with another synthy machine. If you see it cheap, don't think it twice and get it!
