Please test out this mic purchasing it. I agree with the previous reviewer that it is great for acoustic guitar. However, I found that vocals came out muddy sounding. I did not get the crispness and clarity that I desired. I tried it with vintech, fmr, and grace preamps and still could not get a decent sound. The best sound, believe it or not, came by using the mackie preamps on my mixer. Do not buy into the hype on this mic about being comparable to mics 5 times the cost. That is shyte. I'm sure there are certain vocalists that would sound good with this mic but I have yet to find one. I always end up reaching for my Rode NT. It gets the job done every time. I also give this mic 7 for how it sounds with acoustic guitar. Otherwise I'd give it a 3.

There are a lot of valve mics out there these days. More than I can count. This one is another one built by the Chinese and one listen and you can tell. All the Chinese mics I have heard have the same shrillish sound to them. This can be dealt with, with some masterful eq'ing, but who really wants to deal with that every time you set the mic up? I don't.
All in all the mic does impart a very nice low end and the mids sit on the harsh side as well.
The build quality is decent as well the shockmount. The nine polar patterns come in handy for various situations. But let me tell you, as a vocal mic, look elsewhere. There are many vocal mics that do a heck of a lot better job than this will for the $$! You will like it on bass and acoustic guitar. This is where the mic really shines. That said, I give it a 7 for those two reasons alone.

9 pattern tube condenser
I use it for male vocals mostly 3" and straight on from talent.
I was going to get an Neumann M149 but decided to try out this mic even though I never heard anything about it but alot on the a51's and they were all good reviews. So, I went with the A-48 for cost reasons alone and wanted the best I could get for the buck.
I like the build quality of the mic. It's beefy and solid. The shock spyder shockmount it comes with is well built and does it's job very well.
The sound of the mic is warm and open with a slight rise in the low mid range. The highs are a little hard for my taste but fixable with a touch of eq. The mic does have it's own color to it and I guess you could call it vintage but doesn't remind me of the classics...u47...m49-50...c12...251......you know, the classics.
Over all, I like the mic and it is well worth the $700.00 I put out for it. I think a G note is a fair prise for this mic! I wouldn't have it as my only mic if I had only one mic, but I do recommend it. It's a good value and a solid contender!
