Reviewer Background
:
I have been singing on stage for 33 years, I have used nearly every Dynamic and quite a few Condensers.
I have made professional studio recordings, I also have an in home recording studio.
I do Digital and analog recordings.
I review mostly through Sennheiser headphones
Overall Rating
:
10
The AKG 3800 is a dynamic mic with a super cardoid (very tight) pickup pattern. The triangular shape is very easy to hold. The rubber surface (like the Electro-Voice 757-767 series) eliminated slipping.
The "Anvil" style aluminum case is fantastic, and will protect this mic for a lifetime.
I use it on lead vocals live on stage, I own over 30 microphones (in my locker), nearly every one has its own strong points.
I like the Varimotion diaphram capsule. It has a slight presence peak from 3-16 khz to cut through the mix.
One of my favorite mics of all time is the venerable Shure SM-58,
This mic is hotter, loudness wise, and has the smooth sound of a condenser mic.
The Hi mid peak is not as harsh as the SM58, lows are lower and highs are higher.
The 58 has its benefits on stage, when it is hard to hear, the dynamic range of the 58 makes it a bit easier to hear, (you will have to turn it up to match volumn) I still love the 58's in many aspects, especially durability, you just about cannot break them...
I would reccomend the 3800 to any singer who does not mind the proximity effect (bass volumn boost as you get closer)
If you do not like this I'd suggest the Sennheiser MD-431..
another fantastic mic.
Guys with low voices will love this mic, smokers with that certain smoothness that smoking gives will sound great.
(I do not, or endorse smoking)
Think of Nat King Cole on the Christmas Song.. that kind of voice stands out with this mic...
I think of another microphone that is super cheap, The Nady SPC-25
A condenser, sounds a lot like this, just add a little bass.
The SPC-25 cost only $35.00 from Musicians Friend.
The 20khz high frequency on the 3800 will sound lovely on female voices,
