I have used a Shure Beta 58 for vocals for as long as I can remember and it has delivered solid results. Now that I am singing more in my current band, I wanted to see if there was something better...so I wanted to buy the Beta 87. Good thing my Pro Audio guy made me slow down and "A vs. B" several leading pro-caliber mics with high gain before feedback (the Beta 87 & 58, EV 967, Neumann KMS-104, Audix OM-7 and the VX-5). Well, the Neumann was outstanding and won the mic battle royal but the Audix VX-5 gave it quite a run (according to my ears it was the loudest with great detail and oh so WARM). It is also $500 less...Hello, VX-5! I gave my Beta 58 to my keyboard player and my vocals BLOW his away at similar gain/volumes. Don't buy a name...use your ears. They will tell you...
