Reviewer Background

I have a pretty well equipped home studio. Actually, probably more like a real recording studio that happens to be located in a home. Well, the home/rooms that the studio is in have had about as much work done to them as some studios....anyway, on to the mic talk...
I've got nice gear, Neve, API, dbx, Neumann, AKG, Beyer, etc.....
all the right stuff. Mainly record rock. Guitars, drums, bass & vocals. Not much keyboards or sampling really.

I can't say how impressed I am with this. Let me first explain what it is and how it works. It's just the capsule portion of the mic that screws onto the body of an older AKG C451E or EB mic. It must be one of the older versions of this mic, as the new version that they're still selling has a fixed capsule. The older ones had removable capsules that you could swap out with omnis, hyper cardiod, podium types, booms, etc. Really a great concept. Anyway, this one threads right on to give you a large diaphram condenser that sort of sounds like a vintage C12, if they ever made a solid state version of one. That's the best I can describe it as. I was a bit leary as to whether I'd like it or not, but am totally floored. Considering you can pick up these mics, used with the normal CK1 cardiod capsule for around $200-300, then this lollipop capsule for $450, what a smokin deal. It really gives vocals plenty of depth and has a bit of an airy top, but not so over the top like a lot of the cheap new mics. This is a very, very nice sound. I just can't wait to try it on other stuff too. I'm sure it'll make a fine overhead drum mic as well as a few other things too.
