I've been playing harp for a few years now and was browsing ebay for a possible alternative to my green bullet. I came across the Egg-static, which i had never seen or heard of before and placed a bid for #25 not expecting to get it, as most harp mics go for a lot more.

Overall Rating : 3
When I recieved the mic in the post i was very surprised at how light it was. It looks like a little tea strainer. When i plugged it into my amp (a small 12watt custom valve amp)I must admit i was very dissapointed. It's the thinnest, tinniest sounding mic i've ever heard. It has too much treble and NO bottom end.
However, for #25 I suppose it's not all that bad, and it's quite a cool little thing to have. Although I think I'll try to sell mine on for more to someone else!..

Cheers, Will

1: Probably since I screamed first time - well, harp for 40 years
2: On several semipro live and studio recordings
3a:Live: Soundman! - eeh - stage to masterboard into a computer
3b:Studio: My Fender Pro Junior or Blues Junior or a tube preamp through Neumann tube mikes and into a humongous masterboard and into a computer...sometimes I use effect pedals
4: Stored away 'til I move into my new bought house soon...NAD/Harman Kardon amp'ed - my speakers are Bose 505 + an extra power amp, driving whatever I need - I mess with speakers besides the harpmikes

Overall Rating : 10
1: Egg Statics with and without volumepot - crystal or ceramic - unidirectional(?)
2: Handheld
3: I own 50+ classic harpmikes - this is yet another one in a way - I chose it simply to try it out a couple of years ago...
4: It fails short of being as good as my R7 crystal or my CR black label mikes, but you don't get those for 20 dollars!
5: Have both models with and without volumepot - get it with! - I play, repair, restore, modify and collect classic harpmikes - I can recommend this mike for its low price, useful sound qualities, the ingenuity, friendliness and devotedness of its inventor...go find his website...its really cool

I've been wailing harp for 12 years, harp modding amps and making custom harp mics for many pros and endorsee players. I've researched so many mic archives and AB'd every element known including the Eggstatic.
I've built mics with every element known and one that nobody has ever made before, it's still a secret, that flat smokes every element on earth on low end power.

Overall Rating : 2
Eggstatic mic with a Ceramic element. I tested the mic on 2 different class A push/pull vintage amps modded for harp and this mic was the thinnest sounding mic I've ever heard for harp. It sounded like a low Z dynamic from Savon.
Although, I will say it is a cool idea as it's quite comfortable and they're probably making money.
I only bought it because 20 dollars is chump change and then I sold it on ebay for 16.
If I remember correctly the Eggstatic has the wrong ohm value for the volume control. It should be 5Meg for Ceramic elements and a minimum of 2Meg to pick up the lows and full power these type of elements have, but even at the low ohm value it came with it should have had more guts in the scream department.
I don't know who this Blind Uncle somebody is, but he don't know harp mics very well.

Been playing blues harp for about 8 years. Have mics from $10 to $200 and this is one of the ones I take on travel. Gives my Hohner harps a gritty feel that I can't get with more expensive models. I typically play on a small Marshall amp and the noise is very low.

Downside.. well, this coin has two sides. It's light and great for travel or carrying around for impromptu jam sessions, but personally I prefer a mic with a little more weight.

For recording, I'd select something with wider response and dynamic range, but if you're on a budget, this mic fits the bill as well. It is very versitile and with the right combination of equipment it'll show up to work.

I've been making music for about 20 years, and record to a digital 16-track in my basement studio. I've got the usual complement of solid inexpensive LDC's and dynamics and wanted something out of the ordinary. Well, here it is.

Overall Rating : 10
It's a dynamic mic built into an egg-shaped tea infuser! It's intended as a harmonica mic, and it works great as one, but it's also excellent on vocals, acoustic guitar, snare drum, or anything else you want to sound crunchy and lo-fi. Now, look--it's noisy, cheap, and has a 1/4 inch plug, and you will not be asking Celine Dion to sing through it, if you should be so unfortunate as to be choosing mics for her. And good luck putting it in a shockmount. But in conjunction with another microphone it adds a midrangey, compressed sound to your source that you will find a use for. If you want a volume knob, it costs another five dollars. Get yours here:
