For the right situation this is one wicked mic.
Solid crisp sound for vocals.
Works as a lead vocal mic for recordings with the right singer - basically rock or blues. Same thing for live use - in the right context it's a very happening mic.
Retro cool look. Again, in the right context it might be just what you want. I used them live with a singer in a blues band. He said it was the best mic he'd ever heard. Granted, it's a good sounding mic that cuts through very well, but I think part of the "best mic" comment was the psychological effect of singing through a big shiny chrome piece of old school vibe.
Well worth owning if you find one for a reasonable price (like $50 to $75 depending on condition).
One warning though: Originally outfitted with an out of date type of connector, not XLR. If it hasn't already been converted you'll have to locate the appropriate cable or refit it for XLR.

I've been making music for 40+ years. Acoustic/electric guitar, and bass. I also sing. I have a couple years of recording experience, but I'm going to talk about live sound here.

In order to amplify acoustic guitars, in performance or in the practice room, feedback has always been my worst enemy. In order to bring an acoustic guitar up to a high enough volume to be heard against electric guitars and drums, most of us resort to piezo-electric pickups, or regular coil/magnet pickups. Neither of these end up really sounding like acoustic guitar--they can't. One picks up vibrations at the bridge while the other senses the movement of the strings. I know the EV644 is a dinosaur, but I got on a vintage mic collecting kick and wound up with a few.

I've been in love with them from the first time I played my Taylor 6 string through one--not as a recording mic, but for live sound. I can finally get enough isolation to boost my gain and be heard. It sounds like you would expect an acoustic guitar to sound. It simply allows me to get high enough gain (before feedback) to make an acoustic guitar useful in a rock and roll band.

The Electro-Voice 644 mic was known as a workhorse in the film industry. Also known as the "SoundSpot" mic. I believe EV also made two higher quality versions (642 and 643) at about the same time period.

It is highly directional....looks like some kind of Star Wars Space Gun. Some people call it a "shotgun" mic, but I'm not sure that's correct.)

There are probably more modern, higher quality shotgun mics available today, and I'll probably try them eventually, but for now, I'm having too much fun with these to worry about that. For the first time in many years, I can use my acoustic guitar with my band.

I would not recommend this mic for recording, but it's great for live applications.

You can usually find them on eBay for around $50. It's a good idea to make sure it comes with a cable, because they use the old style (not compatible with XLR) connectors. I have seen where people have modified them to accept XLR cables, and have also seen adapters.

I won't be using Piezo-electric pickups anymore.......though the sound of my DeArmond is still cool when I want that sound.
