Reviewer Background
:
The HDW110 is a stereo ribbon microphone that most resembles the Royer SF-12. It???s beautifully constructed in polished chrome and comes packaged in an aluminum locking case with a fitted wooden box to house the microphone, a polished chrome isolation shock mount and a multi-combining box with a 5pin XLR-going to two 3pin XLRs.
I???ve used many ribbons microphones from Coles, AEA, Beyer Dynamics, Fostex and RCA and I own a Cascade Fathead and used it for comparison in a mono to mono shootout on a 20Watt tube guitar combo amp with a single 10??? speaker along with my trusty vintage Fender Stratocaster.

The HDW 110 is a wonderful sounding mono side address ribbon and worked well in combination with or without the Cascade and the two blended well together also. I often experiment using two mics in mono or stereo on my guitar cabinets and the HDW110 handles this job with the ease in which it was intended and surpassed my expectations.
It has exceptional tonality that???s very pleasing and very musical with wide stereo imaging even when close-micing overdriven guitar amps!
It never once overloaded or distorted and remained smooth, detailed and transparent sounding with excellent performance. I imagine that it would do well as a room, drum and percussion overhead, or choir mic with its extended smooth response and ease of setup. At under $325 US the HDW110 should be a NO BRAINER for anyone doing live or remote recording or that???s struggling to mic their guitars up in glorious stereo. Regardless of how many ribbons you already have in your mic locker, if I were you, I???d ad one or two to my mic arsenal right away.
