This is a great mic for what you get... looks like a side-address large-diaphragm condensor, it's actually a front address dynamic... sounds amazing on vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass cabinet and inside a kick drum. I imagine it sounds equally good on other drums, btu haven't put it through those tests yet.
Straight out of the box, I ran this into a M-Audio DMP3 (decidedly a low budget preamp, but it's waht I had handy) and did a track with two acoustic guitars and vocals, all using the PR-40... AMAZING. Clear mids, solid lows, and it seemed like a little shimmer on the top, but not too much so... my voice has never sounded better.
People compare this a lot to the EV RE20 and I'd say that's very fair... only the PR40 costs a lot less.
Highly recommended!
