Reviewer Background
:
How long have you been making music? I used to play since 1994, stopped playing and started recording in 2001 so that makes 7 years recording.
What kind of recording experience do you have?
I started recording with 4 Track Tapes and DJ mixers, passing from soundcraft boards, mackie VLZ boards, SONY DMX1000 "Mini Oxford", AMEK 5.1, and have recorded with the Digi 001, 002, Pro Tools HD, Alesis HD24 and with M-Audio Delta 1010.
I have used Avalon & HHB preamps as well as an Eventide Orville.
Neumann Mics, Studio Projects, AKG, Shure, Blue and Audio Technica.
Right Now i record and mix music from a Modified ONYX 1640 with firewire option to SAW Studio 3.7 with KRK v8 monitors.

The JM37 is a Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic (1.037") with just one pattern -cardioid-.
I use it for voice and acoustic guitar.
I really like the sound of this microphone, it is smooth, voice passing through the Onyx preamps and a DBX 160 compressor sounds powerful. Has as silky golden buttery feeling to it, bright, but not harsh, smooth and present lows. On high vocal levels, did not distort at all. It has its own character.
It is OK for recording instrument by instrument and laying one track at a time.
For what i like to do, it is too OPEN.
It picks up a lot of the surrounding room noise, and cannot use it to isolate voice or instruments when recording a room full of musicians or even just a singer with his guitar. I mean, you can definitely work on the voice, but you will hear A LOT of the other instruments bleeding in.
It handles a high SPLs but a pad switch would have been nice.
I like this microphone but i will limit myself to record track by track with it. For what i do i need a Hyper Cardiod and this is just a Cardioid pattern.
For the money i paid for this item and new, this is a keeper.
I rate it a 7 being... a Neumann U89 and AKG 414 a perfect 10 and a MXL 990 a rounded 4.
