Reviewer Background
:
BG: I've been playing drums since I was 9 yrs old (going on 37). My first recordings are of my drumkit using headphones as mics on a old tube taperecorder with reals. My specialism is probably recording drums. If have recorded hours and hours of music (tape-cassette quality) in the 90' with a friend to get through highschool. Then came the 4-track and later the 8-track cassette recorders I used extensively. After that I joined a band and have been in and out of studio's on several occasions and observing their techniques. The first thing I knew I had to upgrade were the mics.
GEAR: My standard gear is a rig build around a MOTU 828 mkII. To have more then just two mic pre-amps I hooked a behringer ADA8000 up on the Adat-opticals (i/o), a ART DPS-II on the S/PDIF inputs and to use the 8 line-ins I hooked them up to a Studio Projects 828 for pre-amplification for an additional 8 microphones. To be able to work with more musicians at once I got Samson S-Phone headphone amp.
DAW: I use MOTU DP 4.6 on a 1 gigHz powerbook (with a replaced hard-drive for more tracks) as my DAW. Monitoring : Alesis One (active) and Beyer Dynamics DT770 headphones.

This is a large dual membrane capacitor mic. DP stands for double pattern being: cardiode and omni selectable by switch. Furthermore it has another switch for a 10Db pad (position 1) or 20Db Pad (position 2).
I got mic as a present for my patience (it does pay!). I listened to it and was flattered by it's smooth sound. I have yet to test it on cabinets, drums, female voice and classic acoustic instruments. I actually had no omni-directional mic yet, only two figure-8 ribbons so this joemeek was a welcome addition to my growing collection of microphones.
Compared to my SP C1 it stood up very nicely and I can see myself using it to have alternative vocal-mic to match up with a voice that does not quite match the sonority of the SP C1. Same could be aplied for all the other uses mentioned above. For what I could hear was that this mic has all the qualities for a starter microphone (with switchable patterns) or as an alternative sound-option.
Downside:it does have more self-noise than the C1's I have and it takes a while to readjust to a new setting.
Why is there no earlier entry for the brand Joemeek ?
( I had the same strange privilege with the beyerdynamic brand; hence the absence of the capitals for 'beyerdanamic' )
