Reviewer Background
:
I have been playing for over thirty years. Started on Drums, then Guitar (now 25+ years).
I have a recording studio in my basement (8000+ cuft) and I use Samplitude Professional. Before my digital setup I used various mutlti-tracks... wow... were they ever expensive back then.
I monitor on Mackie 824's

The e22S is a side addressed SDC with a single cardioid polar pattern. The mic is a Josephson special design for Steve Albini and is designed for percussion and ruggedness. It's the normal pencil shaped mic with a detachable element. Other Josephson Series Six elements will work with the e22S.
I bought it for Drum overheads, but it also works great on acoustic guitar. It has a lot of proximity effect... it's airy... and very smooth... kind of dark, but with a lot of detail. I had considered the Josephson C42, but decided on the e22S after hearing it. It has a lot of uses and is not a one trick poney. That makes it worth the price...
The design of the mic allows for it to be placed out of the way... this is a great feature... especially for percusion. It'll handle high SPL. The only shortcoming is that the output gain is not as high as some cheaper mics like the NTK or MK012... other than that I can't think of any shortcomings.
I definitely recommend this mic... it's the cat's meow.
