Reviewer Background
:
Acoustic guitar player/singer for over 30 years and recently decided to record MP3s so bought the MXL 603s and 2003 pack. The 603s for the guitars, and the 2003 for vocals.
I've no recording experience, just straight in at the deep end after reading as many HC reviews as possible. Thanks guys, they do help!
Bought a couple of Art preamps to power and boost the mic signals which go into a Zoom MRS-8 digital 8 track. I convert the 'projects' (Zoom speak for tracks) into MP3s on a computer, and upload onto the web.
Bought a pair of Edrol miniMonitors for listening to and mastering tracks.

The 603s is a superb small diameter instrument condenser mic. Excellent value for money. Records clear and bright tracks that cut through any mix. Short on bass but that is ideal when recording big boomy acoustic guitars. Tough and well made. OK for home or the road. No filters, but so far this has not been necessary.
The 2003, now this is a different beast. A Big, black, large diameter condenser mic with a very even response over a huge dynamic range. What I particularly like is it gives a relatively uncoloured and clear acoustic image with excellent detail right up to frequencies only dogs can hear. The capsule has a thin 3micron gold coat which means in practical terms it can respond very fast and pick up the finer detail. It is a good vocals mic. I also use it paired with the 603s to record acoustic guitars and wind instruments. It gives them a vivid presence, every instrument can clearly be define.
The down side is that it is heavy. My boom stand has to be well tightened or it sags. Also the single filter switch can be either set for low or high frequencies, but not both at once. Fortunately I don't need the filters. The mesh is also easily bent. Treat it with respect though and it should give excellent service. Ideal for my home studio, but I would not take it on the road. A pop filter is mandatory (metal mesh seems to work best).
It is very sensitive and when recording guitar and vocals simultaneously a lot of the guitar bleds through to the 2003 mic making balancing the mix tricky. I've taken to deadening the guitar a bit with a rubber 'Feedback Buster' inserted into the sound hole.
Both mics come in a single cardboard box with a foam onset. A couple of pathetic zipper bags are supplied to keep the mics in, but I've found the original box the safest way of storing them. This is an economy mic pack so something had to go, fortunately it is only the fancy box.
Excellent value and I'd recommend this pack to anyone starting a home studio.
