my experience with the 409/609 has been great. if you're miking an electric guitar these are hard to beat. i once was recording a les paul through a vintage gibson fender champ type amp and used a 409 and a vintage neumann u49. tell the truth couldn't tell the difference and the 409 sounded just as good if not better. i am not saying that on vocals or acoustic guitar or whatever that the 409 will always sound better but for a guitar cab, especially a distorted tone it is great. i was recording a rock band once and the 609 (no not the 409) sounded huge - especially compared to an SM57. again one is not better than the other. in fact they compliment eachother. this is a great lead/rythm guitar combo. the other great thing about this mic is how easy it is to place. with a 57 there can be guess work - how far? where? what angle? if you are not familiar and your just want a great tone stick this mic with the face straight againt the speaker about an inch away and you're ready.
i haven't used this for anything else because i have other mics for that. this is my dedicated rock guitar mic. maybe i should try it on other things... as long as they are coming out of my 2x12! rhodes through my stack? awesome! cool effected vocals or drums through an amp? awesome! what mic? 609, 409, ribbon, whatever have fun you never know what sounds good till you try it so stop wasting your time reading this shit and stick a mic where it can be of use.
409 supposedly sounds better than 609 but IMHO it would be pretty hard to tell the difference. so if u have the money get a used 409 but a 609 for $99 is impossible to beat.

These are now overpriced on the used market as they are no longer in production. They will work for just about anything. While not as shimmery on vocals as the typical condenser mic,it sits well in the track as long as you have the rest of your chain sorted out and a good singer helps as well. The proof of this is the first Train album with the hit meet virginia as this was that mic in use.We try'd 15 other mics and the 409 seemed to work best in the track although other more typicly used hi-end mics sounded briter or flashyer by themselves a'capella....the 409 just fit the track in the track.Like I sayd. It's a bit understated on the top.No biggie. The new versions(609) of this mic are also very good.I own one as well and have a hard time hearing any diffrence.@99bucks@sweetwater,they kill the shure 57 or 58.
