This mic records very nicely. Not as clear and crisp as a studio mic but it has a very natural, warm sound to it. It's also very sturdy. For live applications with my voice, it's OK. I have a darker, softer voice so I wish it had a little more gain before feedback.

I've been performing and recording for the last 25 years. I'm a vocalist as well as a guitarist.
I use the e835 for both live performance and recording situations. Currently run a DigiDesign MBox 2 in front of a Mac or a PC. I use GarageBand for demo work and ProTools LE for production.

I love the sound quality of this mic! But I have to make a qualifying statement: Its true characteristics don't come out unless you run it into a preamp to boost and warm up its signal. It sounds okay plugged directly in, but there's something about plugging it into a good preamp that makes the sound that it produces mind-blowing. Granted, a preamp will improve the sound of just about any mic, but I wasn't expecting the effect to be as profound as it turned out to be.
I use one of these for vocals for live performance - it's sturdy and handles regular gigging quite well. Real clear and flat response, and not an overabundance of low end that you get from a SM-58. For recording, I use it for both vocals and close-mic'ing my amps. For close mic'ing, it's a champ, and doesn't overdrive very easily. My amp have to be pretty loud for that to happen.
I'm really sold on this mic.

this is a damn good mic for the price(in my opinion). the high's can be a bit much sometimes but other then that its realy good. especially the gain. i use this mic mainly for heavy metal singers and its handles them well. i have recorded with it aswell, on a snare, guitar cab, and vocals, it sounded good on the snare an exellent on vocals... but i probably would'nt use it on the guitar cab again..maybe a e906 is in order.

I've been a semi-pro keyboard player for over 30 years. I also run the PA from the stage in most situations, and generally oversee the recording of demo CDs and such, too. As such, this is more of a live PA review than a recording review.

This mic has become my 'weapon of choice' in the past few years. In fact, I own seven of them, plus three EW135G2's, which use the same element. While something of an SM58 clone in terms of tone and pattern, the Sennheiser leaves the Shure in the dust in most applications. It's a terrific vocal mic, and a decent stand-in for toms and guitars in situations where a more ideal mic isn't available.
While I like the e845's tone just a little better (thus the 9 vs. 10 rating), the e845 is VERY directional, and although a lead vocalist might not have problems, musicians using fixed mic stands can have a tough time staying in the "sweet spot" in the hypercardiod pattern. I found that we were getting complaints about the vocals "coming and going" with the arguably superior e845. I switched the whole band back to e835's, and the comments disappeared immediately.

Ive been singing for over 30 years on stage and with bands. Ive spent the last 6 years hosting karaoke shows at major venues and worked hard to mix the vocals of almost every singer coming up to the mic. Ive used budget mics up to wireless shure 87A's which I found an awsome stage mic with excellent sound and almost zero feedback.

Id rate the the E835 as an 8.5. It had excellent gain qualities and a very good sound overall but I found the top end gain too much and a little ringy tho quite resonable with the treble turned back on the desk. I also found the bass a little ringy, I probably would have rated the mic a 9 if I didnt own an E845 for a side by side comparison.

I've been making music for 25+ years, playing guitar for 15 yrs., started recording at home about 5 years ago...and have gotten progressively serious at that, with the learning curve finally starting to level off.
Recording to a Yamaha AW2816, generally through either a pair of AMPEX tube preamps or through a somewhat cheesy Behringer Tube Ultragain something-or-other (solid-state pre with a tube stage that i generally turn off or way down.)
I frankly don't have a lot of time to A/B a lot of different mics, so i've generally made do with what i have and what i like at any given time has more to do with feel or the needs of the moment than any deep analysis of a mics properties...the mics i have at my disposal are a pair of SM57s, SM58s, a Rode NT1, and an old Altec "salt shaker."

the e835 is a dynamic cardiod mic. i've been using it for mic-ing a fender champ amp, and for vocals. i used it a lot when i first got it, then went away from it a little, and now that i have a better sense of what i want on any specific song, i find it makes an appearance on just about every recording. it's great for high-gain situations...like the amp. i also love it for vocals b/c i tend to push the gain on the vocal mics, and it can take a lot w/out sounding shrill. has a really nice body to it, a good deal of warmth.
that's what i love about it...nice round tone compared to a SM57/58.
for acoustic instruments, though, i either go to the shures or the rode condensor--you can use the e835 for these applications, but you may find it a challenge to get a good strong signal/noise ratio, as it's not the most sensitive mic on the planet--which, for micing an amp or vocals, is its strength.
i would recommend this mic highly...with the above caveat.
