Reviewer Background :
Home studio owner, have also recorded with platinum engineer before.
Used this mic to record to MOTU 24 I/O => Apple OSX system.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Dynamic snare mic, this model has been discontinued in favor of Sennheiser's new e905, which supposedly is the same mic with a shorter body.

I used the mic as the primary snare mic for a rock recording.
Mic pre was a Manley; no compression applied for basic tracking.
(compression added to drum overheads, though).

I had been looking for a Beyer M201TG for snare, but couldn't find one at this good price. ( I was trying to use something different from the standard SM57).

The results were good, and a little different from what I was expecting. The highs are slightly rolled off, and the midrange isn't extremely hyped, more smooth than an SM57.

I like a little more crisp sound from a snare, but with a little EQ, I was able to make the snare track very good-sounding. (The drum overhead mics also supply plenty of highs).
Interestingly, I was also using a Shure Beta 98 condensor on the bottom of the snare (phase-reversed, of course). Adding a bit of this sound to the e903 didn't actually make the snare sound better...EQ helped the most.

I hope to try this mic at another time on a guitar cab or toms.

I would buy this mic again at this price, but if I could find the Beyer 201 at $150, I would go for that one first.

(note: I HATE numerical ratings, which are garbage, so none given)
