I've been playing music for 50 years now, and have gotten serious about recording in my home studio. I have a Digi002 Protools setup, various outboard preamps and compressors, and a well rounded microphone collection.

The Beyerdynamic MC740 is a multi-pattern, side-address, true condenser microphone. It has proven to be great on drum overheads, acoustic guitar, and vocals. I consider it to be my most flexible condenser microphone. It has all the polar patterns you'll ever need, and it seems to work well wherever I put it. By the way, the MC740 has an output transformer--something you won't find in most mics in this price bracket.
The really cool thing is... MC740 has somehow escaped recognition by the masses. You can get them for a song on eBay (I now have 3 of them) for about the same as a used AKG 414, which doesn't even come close in sound quality.

This is a "world class"large diaphragm condensor with 5 variable polar patterns, pad switch and 2 position lf rolloff.Ive used for vocals and also for kick drum (about a meter out front). Also works good as an overhead on drums.Really could be used in about any situation but I tend toward specific mics for certain instruments.Using for vocals with a fig 8 pattern is where it really shines. Sounds better than a U87 in my view and with a good tube pre its hard to beat.
