It is built well, the pads sensitivity is a bit rough though I guess it needs to get use to,

The keys are solid semi-weighted feel.

I use the pads extensively with an sp-404 (great machine except for the inability to use 2 fx simultaneously, and the lack of velocity sensitivity) I wish I would of got an MPK-25, instead may trade it in for portability and the fact that the faders are worth **** if you don't use abelton, The LCD screen is pretty straight forward, but the software isn't.

I think it is built solidly, but there is really no information on how to assign the cc's to pro tools.

this is the worst thing about the machine I have 48 cc's and how the hell do you use it, this was the main reason why i bought it that and the pads, customer service just says use abelton i have pro-tools and I am on a search for el-derado to figure how to use it so if I was you, get an MPd-24, a standard midi keyboard, and a good mouse.

No luck for any

The machine will be the **** if it wasn't so damn hard to assign midi messages to pro tools

Connectivity : 6
Good, I will like to be able to use without connecting to pro tools like just the mpk and the sp

Additional features : 2
The software is annoying It's vyzx and I always run into trouble opening it up and checking with old presets. I lose the first preset and most of the time the one preset I use most of the time get's lost. One time I assigned the pads to play in the key of D major and the software messed everything up really ****ing annoying.

The keyboard is solid, I never liked the ableton lite software.

Overall Rating : 8
This will be ****ing awesome how about the ability to assign a note to a pad by, pressing a pad than ability to touch a note on the keyboard and than having that note on the pad or even assign more than one note on a pad such as layering.

I am sure it wouldn't be to hard to do that or to even figure it out.

Other than the fact that the cc's suck with pro-tools or the time it will take for me to figure it out, I like the machine it is built well and does what it is suppose to they could of made it easier though.

This keyboard is the first step in the direction on how the music production industry is going to be. Akai-you are definetely in the right directiom.

This controller feels strong and can handle some hard work:).

One thing about this controller is that it picks up automatically with no drivers. I used an AC adapter with a midi cable to my audio interface.

LOVE THIS THING MAN!!! hahaha

I would have to say that I hoped the pads would have been as big as the MPC pads.

If you could create a keyboard with the same features as the MPC 2500 or 60, then you got yourself a winner.

However, this keyboard can definitely be able to do hits in the studio. I would recommend this to anyone using Reason. This thing will make u work differently. It'l make you feel like you just started using Reason again.

It has changed the way I am working.

Thanks Akai. Keep up the good work.

very good keyboard action.

Controller makes terrible noise,
because the chassey resonates when you play the lowest octave.

had to give it back to the seller.

The MPK is a sturdy keyboard with semi-weighted 49 keys with velocity and channel aftertouch. It also has 12 rubber pads like the MPC500 that have 4 banks. They also have velocity settings. It has a very large blue LCD display, and the menus are very easy to navigate via a control pot. There three banks of 8 pots (encoders), 8 sliders, and 8 buttons. There is also some transport buttons as well. An unusual feature for a controller is an arp for the keys and a repeat button for the pads. They are controlled by an internal midi clock.

Pads, buttons, sliders, and encoders can all be assigned any CC# and midi channel. The MPK49 is made of a very sturdy plastic, and is fairly heavy. It is powered either by USB or an external power supply (not included).

Additional Controls : 9
Pitch bend and mod wheels are illuminated There are inputs for an assignable expression pedal and a footswitch for patch changes. The buttons are lit when activated. They and the pads can be programmed to be toggle or momentary. The buttons can also be used for dividing the clock which will control the arp and pad repeat. The MPK49 also has MPC "Full Level" and "12 Levels" functions on its pads, and MPC Swing can be applied to both Note Repeat and arpeggio functions.

Connectivity : 9
Besides a USB input there are separate Midi IN and OUT ports. There is no need for a driver with my PC. It's "Plug and Play."

Additional features : 8
It comes with editing software and a code to download Ableton Lite. I find the editing software to be fairly straight forward. However, to update the firmware is a bit clunky and involved, but well documented. This keyboard does not have the capability to be split. It has a Octave Up and Down button, and it can be transposed via the menu. Although the keyboard can't be split, the keys can be assigned on one midi channel and the individual pads another.

I like this controller quite a lot. I use it for my soft synths (Reaktor, Absynth, Moog Modular V, and Ableton) as well as my Waldorf Q rack. It works perfectly. I find the keys to have a very good feel and weight. They are superior when compared to an Emu or M-Audio Radium controller. The menus are very simple to understand and navigate around. You can create 30 custom presets. It's very easy to change synth patches with the MPK49.

The pads could be made more sensitive. I've had to put sensitivity, threshold, and velocities to their most sensitive settings. Otherwise I would have to beat on the pads quite hard to trigger them. On some software I have to put the pads on FULL velocity. Otherwise, on software like Ableton or Waldorf Attack, they work fine. Even so, I wish Akai would make the pads more sensitive.

The MPK49 seems like a very sturdy controller and would be quite usable for live performance. I definitely recommend it. For the money it is quite a nice piece of equipment.
