This is a near-field studio speaker.
I bought it a few months ago after using the Event 20/20 passive speakers for 10 years in a songwriting home studio.

The XL stands for Extra Loud and this thing can crank, although I'm not a high-decibel fan.

I traded up to these speakers because the mismatch of my Samson 260 amp and Event 20/20 speakers was bothering me.
The TR8XLs sounded way better out of the box, but took the time to weld up a rock solid set of speaker stands and the sound improvement was BigTime...

I was a little disappointed that there was no ability to dial in the room with switches or controls of the back of the speakers. But hey...the speakers are designed for a flat response...guess I'll have to tune the room instead...

One small niggle....from the day I pulled them out of the packaging, one speaker POPs when I switch it off, even with everything turned down. I know it's not supposed to, but the drag of taking it in to the agents and leaving it there for two weeks or more is something I can do without...so POP on....Otherwise I like 'em a lot. The reasons I bought Event speakers again were the quality of the original 20/20s...and also a near-field monitor shootout that Electronic Musician did last year, which the TR8XLs won aginst some pretty tough opposiyion.....I'm a happy guy...
