The overall sound quality of these speakers is great. I use them for mixing music. As I am currently at college, and my dorm room is not sound treated and lacks sufficient bass trappings, it can loose accuracy in the low end in my horribly echo-y room. The Mackies have acoustic space and bass/treble roll-off switched on the back to help compensate, and they work well too, subtly coloring the tone.
But when I'm home with my parents over summer, I use these things in a well sound proofed basement, and they sound immaculate. The bass is the greatest, subtly stated sound in the world. I am satisfied with the way my mixes turn out every time. They have TONS of volume, too. It is incredibly difficult to distort these things, and you'll never push them that hard anyways, unless you are trying to use them for a club party.
These speakers also hae a very wide sweet spot. The bass really sounds good in a good 5-10ft wide area, depending on how far apart the speakers are. The stereo imaging is fantastic.

The design works, I've never had a problem at all with it. The features are all that you could possibly ask for in a monitor. The cabinet is fairly heavy and solid, which is what you want: the weight is due to good shielding and a rigid H brace minimizing vibrations from the bass.

I've never had any problems with the speakers at all. I've owned them for 3 years and have moved them around several times, but have taken care when doing so. Extremely sturdy and well built, as far as I can tell.

Good wideband monitor. Had to take one back, it appeared to be a repaired version anyway, but I think that is a fault of the store.

I tried many monitors, and at one place the salesman was pushing these other monitors, and damn, they sounded a lot better than the Mackies. I really liked the specs on the Makies, too. Hmmm. I kept A/Bing them, and noticed that the cones on the Mackies were moving when the buttons said that the other monitors were active. They had miswired their demo stand, and the great sounding speakers were actually the Mackies. That sold me. I could hear the difference, and it was good.

Like the I/O and the flat spectrum, and the sound, ahh, the sound. You can really hear the stereo separation. It is nice and heavy with the passive radiator, also it has a short turn-on delay, which helps to avoid pops if you turn it on at the same time as the rest of the equipment. The front panel light is pleasant and not too bright. The finish is superb.

I would get again. I want to get the matching sub. I am redesigning my recording room around the monitor.

Sound is bloody fantastic!
I am using these at home to provide sound for my Yamaha Motif XS8
They can and have handled everything the broad spectrum Motif sends to them. Hip Hop bass, crisp clear acoustic piano, wicked guitar licks or what have you the Mackie's dish it out sweet!

One of the unique features is the pre-installed mounting hardware for use with Omni-Mounts. A great thing if you need or want the 824's off the ground and on the wall. At a tick under 40lb's a substantial mounting system is a must!
It may be a bit ploy but these speakers are THX approved. Who else's are.....???? Keep looking.
Another neat feature is the "auto power on". When selected this allows the amp to sleep when no signal is present and to "auto on" when a 40db threshold is reached.

Better than I could have hoped. Lead to believe I sound damn good based on the opinions of several listeners.
I researched the dog snot out of what to use for my keyboard application. JBL, Genlec's, Adam's, Tanoy's, listened to many and
picked a pair of Mackie 824mk2's.
Don't believe the bovine/excrement out there about reference or studio monitors not being the right choice for listening. All speakers "color" sound to some degree. Buy these and your music loving friends will be colored "GREEN" with envy.
