I've been playing in bands for 12+ years, and have recorded in the best studios NZ has to offer. I have worked and jammed with many great drummers. I play guitar driven rock, a mix of metal hard rock and classic rock. My main guitar is an Epiphone les Paul, but I also use my 92 Fender Strat with an aftermarket humbucker.

I have been using Beta Monkey Double Bass Mania with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 or Adobe Audition 1.5 using my Line 6 tone port to record the parts. I've had the library a few months and listen on some stereo monitors / headphones.

WOW ! Definately worth the price tag, as a solo guitarist you spend a lot time searching the net for beats to compliment your songs but there isnt much out there that can genuinely compete with these loops. I have scoured the net in search of the perfect drum loops and there are some good quality ones out there but none of them ever sounded like a real drummer, and i hated that.

Some of the files are definately recorded a little too hot and you have to do a bit of work on them. Its not perfect and I think what the sets lack is a simple verse beat. Many of the double kicks would make great choruses but if you want simple straight metal beats aka Tommy Lee or anything off Metallica's Load album it just doesnt have that. They do have a friendship with natural grooves who have helped flll some of the gaps.

Overall its great value for money and you wont be dissapointed if you're looking for a quick way to create natural sounding drum loops.

I have been playing metal guitar for about 22 years. Yes, a child of the 80s. I have been using Cakewalk Home Studio for about three years with the separate Cakewalk Drumatic loops CD. The Beta Monkey CD arrived today and I have been listening to the loops to get an idea of what's there. I have a pair of Sennheiser flat response mixing headphones.

Overall Rating : 9
This set of loops is definitely worth the price. I choose Beta Monkey because for double bass metal loops they are the only game in town. Cakewalk Drumatic are great sounding loops, perhaps better sounding from a production standpoint than Beta Monkey but for specialized speed metal loops Beta Monkey cleans the floor with Drumatic. The playing on Beta Monkey is excellent to this guitarist's ears.

There are not a wide variety of sounds because this is a specialized collection for a specific purpose, which is exactly what I was looking for. No other company that I am aware of offers double bass drum loops in this format. I am very pleased.

Regarding the production: the loops sound fine but may be a little too dry to use as is in a recording. However, just a slight tweak of the EQ is all you need to get it up to snuff. They are a small company. I even got a handwritten thank you note on my invoice. I recommend these drum loops to all the metal guitarists out there who previously have been ignored by the drum loop industry.

In brief:

Cakewalk Drumatic = Phil Rudd
Beta Monkey Double Bass Mania = Dave Lombardo

Worth the money...yes. Really cool patterns and the playing is cool. Some great chops here! Realistic playing for rock tunes. BUT...the production is spotty. Even loops from the same group have different quality. Alot of phase issues. Some of the loops are recorded too hot...In the red zone for sure. This is a really great collection of loops for making real sounding drum tracks. It's not like the overprocessed offerings from other vendors. Betamonkey would really benefit from a higher end production values. Hopefully later releases will bear this out. Overall, if you are a rock/metal guitarist or play that genre this is a really cool collection and I recomend grabbing a CD. I'm sorry I can't give a higher mark because the playing deserves it...it's just the production...

I've been making music for about five years now.. my music borders on death metal but is a little more melodic. I blend in a lot of industrial and sometimes hip hop elements for added melody and diversity. I play a Fender Stratocaster guitar and record onto my computer with Adobe Audition and Pro Tools. I've only just started experimenting with computer editing programs and so far so good.

Let me tell you something about the disc I got. I have had several drummers in my band but none of them came close to creating the type of intense, heavy, fast grooves that are contained in this CD. You can tell that the person who created the samples has a real passion for this kind of music and that's an essential part of creating your own music, the passion that you have for it. I've had it for only a few short hours and my whole afternoon ended up being dedicated to experimenting with these sounds, because they're so easy to use. A lot of people critique sample CDs but I don't think anyone in their right mind would say anything negative about this CD. I mean, there's just no way that you could. The fills are insane, the groves are perfectly agressive and the solos have the ability to catch the attention of anyone within an ear shot. For just under thirty bucks, these are not only the best loops you can find at an affordable price, they're the best loops you'll find at ANY price. The company ships out the CDs quick and are extremely friendly with their customers. They also included samples of an upcoming disc on this CD as well. This is really worth the price, I recommend it to anyone that's interested in creating their own music.
