I have a Pearl Free Floating snare in several depths. It can accomodate several different sizes of shells, as no actual hardware is mounted to the shell. This is a very versatile snare. I originally got it with a 3.5" maple 6-ply shell.(kind of thin). It had body, warmth, and projection. Just too woody sounding for someone like me who likes metal shelled snares. I didn't have to wait long to find out what other shells sound like. I bought several replacement shells made from other materials on Ebay. One shell was an acrylic 5" shell (made by RCI), one was a 6.5" brass shell, and one was a 6.5" steel shell. All that is required to change a shell is to remove the top head, then drop a new shell in, Replace head and rim and off you go. If you want a different depth shell, you have to get different length lug posts. I was lucky enough to get these with the shells I bought. I just am in shock at how responsive and delicate the sound is from this drum. I found that because this has a dual strainer, with extended snares (they protrude past the edge of the drum) snare response is unreal. The die cast rims are heavy and keep the tuning evenly. When I pop in the 3.5" shell, it sounds like a gunshot. This can be tuned from just above a wrinkle to drumline tight and it never choked on me. I cant remember what type of head came with it , as I had several Evans SD dry heads stocked up. It has 10 lugs and the hardware all attaches to an aircraft aluminum quality bottom ring. This ring also contains the bearing edge, as all shells have only one bearing edge on the batter side, and have a squared bottom reso side edge. There are shells available in 3.5",5", 6.5", 8" and almost any material can be used for shells such as acrylic, bronze, brass, steel, maple, copper, carbon fiber, so choices are unlimited in size/material combinations.
I honestly cant think of anything thats wrong with this drum. I had some trouble figuring out how to remove the posts, and slightly damaged one superficially when I tried to turn it with a wrench. (left teeth marks in the chrome.) I would highly recommend this drum for any style of music, from hard rock/metal , to country and jazz. I havent found a tuning range this drum cant hit, with the different shell depths/materials available to you.

I have been playing for 30 years, and I have 7 other snares. I would buy this again if lost or stolen. This snare is like a tank, and has been a real workhorse for me.
